These small but unsightly clusters of red, blue, or purple veins commonly appear on the thigh, calves, and ankles. It is estimated that at least half of the adult population is plagued with this common cosmetic problem.
Sclerotherapy has been used in Europe for more than 60 years. It was introduced into the US 30 years ago, but has only recently become popular in the past decade.
Tiny injections of concentrated salt solution are injected into the veins causing them to close down. The procedure is well tolerated as local anesthetic is mixed with the salt solution.
